The same reactivity that makes HMDS so useful also makes it something to respect. It is flammable, it irritates skin, eyes and the respiratory tract, and it reacts with water to release ammonia. None of this makes it especially exotic to handle - it sits comfortably within normal solvent-handling practice - but it does demand the right PPE, ventilation, storage and disposal. 2. Toxicity & Health Effects 🩺

HMDS is primarily an irritant rather than a highly acutely toxic substance, but exposure should still be minimized:

  • 🔹 Skin: contact causes irritation; repeated exposure can defat and dry the skin.
  • 🔹 Eyes: can cause significant irritation; splashes require immediate flushing.
  • 🔹 Inhalation: vapors and released ammonia irritate the nose, throat and lungs; high concentrations can cause coughing and discomfort.
  • 🔹 Ingestion: harmful if swallowed - never pipette by mouth or eat/drink in the work area.

3. Flammability & Fire Safety 🔥

HMDS is a flammable liquid with a low flash point, meaning its vapors can ignite well below room-temperature extremes. Treat it with the same caution as other flammable organic solvents:

  • 🔹 Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces, sparks and static discharge.
  • 🔹 Use only in well-ventilated areas - ideally a fume hood.
  • 🔹 Ground and bond containers when transferring larger volumes.
  • 🔹 For firefighting, use dry chemical, CO₂, alcohol-resistant foam or dry sand - not a water jet, which can spread the fire and reacts with the material.

5. Safe Handling Practices ✅

7. Spills & First Aid 🚿

🚨 Spill response (general principles)

Eliminate ignition sources, ventilate the area, wear PPE, and contain the spill with an inert absorbent (such as dry sand or vermiculite - not water). Collect into a sealed, labeled container for disposal. Evacuate and call emergency services for large spills.

  • 🔹 Eye contact: rinse with water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open; seek medical attention.
  • 🔹 Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing, wash with soap and water; seek medical advice if irritation persists.
  • 🔹 Inhalation: move to fresh air; seek medical attention if symptoms continue.
  • 🔹 Ingestion: do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical attention.

8. Disposal ♻️

HMDS and HMDS-contaminated materials are hazardous waste. Do not pour down the drain. Collect waste in compatible, labeled containers and dispose of it through a licensed hazardous-waste contractor in accordance with local, regional and national regulations. Spent solvent from SEM drying or derivatization work should be treated the same way. When in doubt, consult your institutional EHS office.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔹 Is HMDS toxic?

HMDS is primarily an irritant to skin, eyes and the respiratory system and is harmful if swallowed, rather than being highly acutely toxic. Exposure should still be minimized with proper PPE and ventilation. Always check the current SDS.

🔹 Why can't I use water to put out an HMDS fire?

No. HMDS and contaminated solvent are hazardous waste and must be collected and disposed of through a licensed contractor per local regulations.
