Every waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) is built from a diisocyanate, and whether that isocyanate is aliphatic or aromatic decides how the film holds its colour outdoors. 🔬 The Core Difference: Aromatic Ring vs Aliphatic Chain

The distinction is structural. Aromatic isocyanates - such as TDI (toluene diisocyanate) and MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) - contain a benzene ring next to the reactive group. Aliphatic isocyanates - such as HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate), IPDI (isophorone diisocyanate), and H12MDI - have no aromatic ring; the reactive groups sit on straight or cyclic carbon chains. That single feature - ring or no ring - is the root of almost every performance difference below.

🌈 Why Aromatic PUDs Yellow

Under UV light, the aromatic ring undergoes photo-oxidation, forming coloured quinone-type structures that make the film turn yellow, then amber. This is a chemical inevitability, not a formulation defect - aromatic PUDs will yellow with sustained UV exposure, and no additive fully stops it. The upside is that aromatic isocyanates are cheaper and highly reactive, so they remain excellent where colour is not critical:

  • ✅ Dark or heavily pigmented systems that mask any yellowing;
  • ✅ Adhesives and primers hidden beneath a topcoat;
  • ✅ Cost-sensitive projects where UV colour stability is irrelevant.

✨ Why Aliphatic PUDs Stay Clear

With no aromatic ring to photo-oxidise, aliphatic PUDs resist yellowing and keep their colour and gloss under UV. They are the non-yellowing choice, reserved for work where appearance must last:

  • ✅ Exterior and outdoor coatings exposed to sunlight;
  • ✅ Automotive and architectural finishes with long colour-life demands;
  • ✅ White and light-coloured systems where yellowing would show.

Common aliphatic building blocks include HDI (HDI on PubChem) and IPDI (IPDI on PubChem). The trade-off is cost: aliphatic isocyanates are markedly more expensive and slower to react.

⚠️ Safety: Diisocyanates Are Respiratory Sensitisers

Both aliphatic and aromatic diisocyanates are respiratory sensitisers - inhalation of vapour or aerosol can cause occupational asthma, and once sensitised a worker may react to very low levels. The decision is usually straightforward: 💡 if the film will see sunlight or must stay clear and colour-stable, pay for aliphatic; if it lives indoors, sits under a topcoat, or is dark enough to hide yellowing, aromatic saves cost with no visible downside. Because aliphatic and aromatic types can be paired with any backbone, read the isocyanate and the backbone together - for example, an aliphatic polycarbonate PUD is the premium choice for durable outdoor clear coats. 💡 Honest Note: "Aliphatic" Is Not a Cure-All

Aliphatic chemistry stops UV yellowing, but it does not automatically fix chalking, gloss loss, or hydrolysis - those depend on the backbone, pigmentation, and any light stabilisers. And aliphatic grades cost more and cure more slowly. Specify aliphatic where colour stability truly matters; do not pay the premium for hidden or interior layers that will never see UV.
