NMP Solvent FAQ: 20 Questions Buyers Ask
Everything You Need to Know About 1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone Before You Buy
Whether you are evaluating N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP, CAS 872-50-4) for the first time, preparing a procurement spec sheet, or double-checking a technical detail before a shipment arrives, this FAQ hub covers the 20 most common questions buyers ask about NMP 📚. We have split them into five groups: identity & naming, physical properties, health & safety, applications & alternatives, and sourcing & commercial.
Each answer is concise enough to skim in under a minute, and every section links to the deeper companion article in our NMP series if you want the full picture. This is the final article in a 12-part series - if you are searching for something specific and don't find it here, chances are one of the preceding articles covers it in depth.
1. 🏷️ Identity & Naming
🔹 Q1. What does NMP stand for?
NMP stands for N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone. The "N" indicates that the methyl group (−CH₃) is attached to the nitrogen atom of the pyrrolidone ring. It is also correctly called 1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidinone, and sometimes abbreviated as M-Pyrol (legacy Ashland trade name) or 1M2P (lab shorthand). All refer to the same compound with CAS number 872-50-4.
🔹 Q2. What is the meaning of "NMP" in chemistry?
In chemistry, NMP means a five-membered lactam (cyclic amide) in which the ring nitrogen carries a methyl substituent and the adjacent ring carbon carries a carbonyl (C=O). Its IUPAC name is 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one. The lactam structure is what gives NMP its unusually strong hydrogen-bond accepting ability - and therefore its solvent power. For a full primer, see our article What Is NMP? A Complete Guide.
🔹 Q3. What is the CAS number of NMP?
The CAS Registry Number for N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is 872-50-4. Its EC (EINECS) number is 212-828-1, its molecular formula is C₅H₉NO, and its molecular weight is 99.13 g/mol. Always confirm the CAS number when ordering - it is easy to confuse NMP with the unmethylated parent 2-Pyrrolidone (CAS 616-45-5) or with NEP (N-Ethyl-2-Pyrrolidone, CAS 2687-91-4), which have different regulatory status.
🔹 Q4. Is NMP the same as 1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidinone?
Yes - they are the same molecule. The names differ only in ending convention. "Pyrrolidone" is the older common name; "pyrrolidinone" is the modern IUPAC-style ending. Both names are used interchangeably across catalogues, SDS documents, and technical data sheets. Both share CAS 872-50-4 and behave identically.
2. 📊 Physical Properties
🔹 Q5. What is the boiling point of NMP?
NMP has a boiling point of approximately 202 °C at 1 atmosphere. This high boiling point is one of its most useful features - it lets chemists run reactions above 150 °C at atmospheric pressure, and gives coating operations a smooth, defect-free evaporation profile. The downside is that drying and recovery both require substantial energy.
🔹 Q6. What does NMP smell and look like?
Pure NMP is a clear, colourless liquid with a faint amine-like odour. A yellow or orange tint indicates oxidation or contamination - good-quality industrial NMP should have an APHA (Pt-Co) colour reading of ≤ 30, and battery / electronic grade ≤ 10. The odour is mild enough that it cannot be relied on as an exposure warning - ventilation matters.
🔹 Q7. Is NMP a polar or non-polar solvent?
NMP is strongly polar. Its dielectric constant is approximately 32.2 at 25 °C and its dipole moment is approximately 4.09 D - higher than DMF, DMAc, or DMSO. It is classified as a polar aprotic solvent because it has no O–H or N–H bonds to donate a proton. Full property details are in our article on physical & chemical properties of NMP.
🔹 Q8. Is NMP miscible with water?
Yes - NMP is fully miscible with water at all ratios and at all practical temperatures. It is also fully miscible with alcohols, ketones, ethers, esters, and most polar aprotic and chlorinated solvents. It shows only partial miscibility with aliphatic hydrocarbons, which is exactly what makes it useful as an extraction solvent for aromatics.
🔹 Q9. What is the shelf life of NMP?
NMP has a typical shelf life of 24 months in its original sealed container, stored indoors at 5 – 30 °C, away from direct sunlight and strong oxidisers. Once a drum is opened, treat it as 6 months unless water content and APHA colour are re-checked. Detailed storage best practices are in our NMP storage, drying & solvent recovery article.
3. ⚠️ Health, Safety & Regulation
🔹 Q10. Is NMP toxic?
NMP is not acutely toxic (no sudden lethality), not a carcinogen, and not a mutagen. The concern is chronic, low-dose, repeated exposure - especially through skin - which can cause reproductive and developmental effects. NMP is classified as Reproductive Toxicity Category 1B under EU CLP (H360D - may damage the unborn child). For full toxicology, see our article Is NMP Toxic? Health Effects & Safe Handling.
🔹 Q11. Is NMP flammable?
NMP is classified as combustible, not flammable. Its closed-cup flash point is approximately 91 °C, which is above the 60 °C threshold used by UN Model Regulations for flammable liquids. It is generally not classified as a dangerous good for transport, which simplifies sea-freight. It will burn if heated above its flash point or exposed to sustained fire - its lower flammability limit in air is around 1.3 vol %.
🔹 Q12. Is NMP banned?
No - NMP is not banned anywhere for industrial use. It is restricted. Under EU REACH Annex XVII Entry 71 (in force since May 2020), workplace exposure must stay below binding DNELs of 14.4 mg/m³ inhalation and 4.8 mg/kg/day dermal. In the US, EPA proposed a TSCA risk-management rule in June 2024 that would limit certain consumer and commercial uses; as of early 2026 the rule is still being finalised. See our NMP regulation 2026 article for the current status.
🔹 Q13. What PPE is needed for handling NMP?
The minimum PPE for industrial NMP handling is: butyl rubber or laminated multi-layer gloves (not nitrile - nitrile breaks through in under 30 minutes), chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistant apron, and a work area with local exhaust ventilation. For confined-space or high-concentration work, add a supplied-air respirator. Pregnant and breastfeeding workers should be rotated out of direct-handling roles as a precaution.
4. 🏭 Applications & Alternatives
🔹 Q14. What is NMP solvent used for?
The six biggest industrial uses of NMP are: (1) Li-ion battery cathode slurry (dissolving PVDF binder), (2) petrochemical aromatics & butadiene extraction (Purisol, Lurgi processes), (3) polyimide, aramid, and polyamide-imide polymerisation, (4) industrial paint stripping & equipment cleaning, (5) pharmaceutical API synthesis (SNAr, Buchwald couplings, heterocyclic condensations), and (6) semiconductor / PCB cleaning. Battery applications are the fastest-growing segment.
🔹 Q15. Why is NMP a good solvent?
NMP combines four properties that are rare in a single solvent: high dielectric constant (~32) for dissolving ionic compounds, strong hydrogen-bond acceptor strength (Kamlet–Taft β = 0.77) for dissolving polar polymers, no hydrogen-bond donor (aprotic - keeps nucleophiles reactive in SN2/SNAr reactions), and high boiling point (202 °C) for high-temperature chemistry and clean coating. Very few alternative solvents match all four.
🔹 Q16. Is there a greener alternative to NMP?
For some applications, yes - Cyrene (dihydrolevoglucosenone), γ-valerolactone (GVL), sulfolane, and N-butyl-2-pyrrolidone (NBP) are the four most credible candidates. They are not one-to-one drop-in replacements - each has specific strengths and weaknesses. For Li-ion battery cathode slurry specifically, no commercial alternative yet matches NMP at gigafactory scale. Full analysis in our NMP alternatives and green solvents article.
🔹 Q17. What is the difference between NMP and DMF?
Both are polar aprotic solvents, both dissolve PVDF and polyurethane, both are SVHC-listed reproductive toxicants. Key differences: NMP's boiling point is 202 °C vs DMF's 153 °C; NMP has a higher dipole moment (4.09 vs 3.86 D); DMF is cheaper (≈ 40 – 50 % less per tonne); DMF has additional liver-toxicity concerns (IARC Group 2B). NMP dominates battery manufacturing; DMF dominates PU synthetic leather. See our detailed NMP vs DMF vs DMAc vs DMSO comparison.
5. 💰 Sourcing & Commercial
🔹 Q18. What is the price of NMP in 2026?
Indicative FOB-China prices as of Q1 2026: industrial grade ≈ USD 1,500 – 2,200 per tonne; electronic / battery grade ≈ USD 2,200 – 3,200 per tonne; pharma grade ≈ USD 3,000 – 4,500 per tonne. Prices rose 15 – 25 % between 2024 and early 2026 on lithium-carbonate recovery and battery-industry restocking. Always request a formal quotation for your specific grade, volume, and Incoterms. Market detail in our global NMP market & price trend article.
🔹 Q19. What is the HS code for NMP?
NMP ships under HS code 2933.79 - "other lactams, excluding 6-hexanelactam (epsilon-caprolactam)". Destination countries may apply additional digits (8 or 10-digit national codes). Standard packaging: 200-kg steel drums (80 drums per 20' container), 1000-L IBC totes, or ISO tanks. NMP is not classified as a UN dangerous good in most jurisdictions because its flash point (~91 °C) sits above the 60 °C threshold.
🔹 Q20. Where can I buy NMP in bulk?
China produces approximately 70 % of global NMP output and is the most competitive source for industrial, electronic, and battery grades. Major global producers include BASF, Yuneng Chemical, Synmiway Chemical, MYI Chemical, Wanhua Chemical, and Shandong NET. For import-ready supply with full regulatory documentation (China-GHS SDS, EU eSDS, US HCS 2024, ICH Q3C statement), contact Sinolook Chemical - we supply all four grades (industrial / electronic / battery / pharma) to 50+ countries, in drums, IBC totes, or ISO tanks, with flexible MOQ starting from 1 tonne for trial orders.
